FIDE Title Norms: Complete Guide

FIDE awards titles based on rating achievements and tournament performances called "norms." A norm is earned by achieving a specified TPR against a field of titled players over 9 games. This calculator helps you determine what you need to score in your next tournament.

Additional Norm Requirements

  • Federations: Opponents must come from at least 2 different federations (3 for GM/IM from 2022).
  • Titled opponents: Minimum number of titled players required (see table above).
  • Games: At least 9 rounds in the tournament for a valid norm.
  • Time control: Minimum 90 minutes for the whole game (classical chess only).

Direct Titles (Without Norms)

Some achievements grant a direct title: World Junior Champion → GM; Continental Champion → GM (subject to minimum rating); World Senior Champion → IM; Olympiad gold on board 1 → GM title.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I earn all 3 norms in one tournament?

No. Norms must be from at least 2 different tournaments. You can earn at most 1 norm per event.

How long are norms valid?

Norms do not expire. Once earned, they remain valid permanently. You can earn them years apart.

Do online tournaments count?

No. Only over-the-board FIDE-rated tournaments count for title norms. Online ratings are separate.
