Elo Rating and IQ: What's the Connection?
The question "What is my chess IQ?" is one of the most searched chess topics online. While chess rating and IQ measure different things, studies show a correlation between high chess ability and high cognitive performance.
What Research Says
A 2016 study found that chess skill correlates significantly with fluid reasoning, processing speed, and working memory. Elite players score 1-2 standard deviations above average on cognitive tests. However, chess rating is NOT an IQ test — it measures chess-specific pattern recognition, calculation, and experience.
How the Estimator Works
Our calculator uses a simple formula: IQ ≈ (Elo - 400) / 15 + 100. This provides a rough estimate with a ±10 point range. The tool is designed for entertainment and comparison purposes only.
