Understanding Chess Time Controls
Time controls determine how much thinking time each player gets in a chess game. The right time control balances depth of play with practical game duration. Our calculator helps tournament organizers, coaches, and players plan their sessions.
Types of Time Controls
- Classical (90+30): Standard tournament chess. 90 minutes base + 30 seconds per move. Average game: 4-6 hours. Used in FIDE-rated events.
- Rapid (15+10): Faster paced. 15 minutes + 10 seconds increment. Average game: 30-60 minutes. Popular for online and club play.
- Blitz (3+2): Very fast. 3 minutes + 2 seconds. Average game: 6-10 minutes. Tests quick pattern recognition.
- Bullet (1+0): Extreme speed. 1 minute, no increment. Average game: 2-3 minutes. Flagging is a key tactic.
How Increment Works
Increment adds seconds to your clock after each move. A 15+10 game means you start with 15 minutes and gain 10 seconds after every move. Over 40 moves, you accumulate an extra 400 seconds (6min 40s) of thinking time.
Tournament Planning Tips
- For a 5-round Swiss with 90+30 time control, plan for 8-10 hours total session time
- Allow 15-30 minutes buffer between rounds for pairings and breaks
- Blitz tournaments with 9+ rounds can fit into a 3-4 hour evening session
- Consider using 15+10 for club nights — games finish in under an hour
